When Beautiful Spaces Sound Terrible
Hard floors. Exposed ceilings. Floor-to-ceiling glass. These are the signatures of contemporary architecture — and the enemies of acoustic comfort. Sound bounces between reflective surfaces in milliseconds, layering echo upon echo until a conversation across a table becomes an effort in itself.
This problem has a precise measurement: RT60 — reverberation time. And it has a precise solution: the right acoustic treatment, applied in the right quantities to the right surfaces.
What Is RT60 — And Why Does It Matter?
RT60 stands for Reverberation Time 60dB — the number of seconds it takes for a sound to decay by 60 decibels after its source stops. Clap once in an empty concrete room and count the seconds until silence. That's roughly your RT60.
"A space that looks refined but sounds chaotic will always feel uncomfortable. Acoustic panels don't just reduce noise — they complete the design."
RT60 is calculated using Sabine's Formula: RT60 = 0.161 × Volume ÷ Total Absorption (sabins). Every surface absorbs a fraction of the sound hitting it, described by its NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient). The calculator above combines all surfaces in your room and shows your real RT60 — updating live as you adjust.
RT60 Target Reference by Space Type
| Space Type | Target RT60 | If Exceeded | Primary Need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recording / broadcast studio | 0.2 – 0.4s | Critical | Total sound control |
| Office / co-working | 0.4 – 0.6s | Noisy, fatiguing | Focus & clarity |
| Conference / meeting room | 0.5 – 0.7s | Miscommunication | Speech intelligibility |
| Restaurant / café | 0.8 – 1.2s | Guests raise voices | Ambient comfort |
| Residential living room | 0.4 – 0.6s | Echo, restlessness | Calm & warmth |
| Hotel lobby / reception | 0.6 – 1.0s | Noisy arrival experience | Clarity + impression |
| Classroom / education | 0.4 – 0.6s | Reduced retention | Attention & learning |
How Crafta Forms Acoustic Panels Work
Every Crafta Forms acoustic panel is engineered from high-performance PET felt — a dense, recycled polyester material with exceptional sound-absorbing properties. When sound waves contact the panel surface, the fibrous structure converts acoustic energy into trace heat, preventing the reflection that causes reverberation.
Why PET Felt?
- NRC values of 0.65–0.90 depending on panel thickness and texture profile
- Manufactured from recycled polyester — environmentally responsible
- Available in 3D textured, grooved, geometric and CNC-carved designs
- Fire-retardant variants available for commercial compliance
- Lightweight and easy to install on walls or as suspended ceiling elements
